5 Drinks that Increase Your Metabolic Rate

Metabolism, derived from the Greek word “metabolismos” where “metabole” means change. Its studies date back to the 13th century by Ibn al-Nafis (1213-1288). It is much more than burning our fat and making us fit. Read below to find more and how you can increase it.


What is Metabolism?

Metabolism is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. Metabolism involves all the chemical reactions occurring inside a living being that keeps the cells alive and sustains life. It can further be divided into two categories:

1. Catabolism- Breakdown of molecules/organic matter to obtain energy

2. Anabolism- Synthesis of all compounds needed by cells using this energy


However, the word metabolism is often used interchangeably with the metabolic rate or the number of calories you burn. The higher metabolic rate is, the easier it gets to lose weight. Today, I’ll share 5 drinks that can help you increase your metabolic rate.

1. Cold Water

Drinking water before meals suppresses your appetite and hence keeps your consumption low. WebMD states that drinking water before meals results in an average reduction in intake of 75 calories per meal.

Drinking ice cold water helps boost your metabolism because your body has to work harder to warm the water up, therefore burning more calories and helping you to lose weight.

2. Black Coffee

Coffee contains all its benefits in its psychoactive stimulant drug, caffeine. Caffeine raises ketone levels which help burn fat, curb cravings and power your brain. Thus boosting our metabolic rate.


3. Green Tea

I have been drinking this for nearly 5 years now and I must tell you, it is one of the healthiest drinks among all. It is rich in antioxidants, uplifts mood, increases our stamina, improves our immune system, helps fight cough, cold & illness are some of the many benefits. The antioxidant called catechins or more accurately Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). A substance that can boost metabolism. It inhibits an enzyme that breaks down the hormone Norepinephrine which further results in fat breakdown.

4. Green Coffee

It is not the general coffee that you drink daily. These seeds are not roasted, unlike regular coffee beans. This helps to retain potent benefits that are not present in normal coffee beans. Chlorogenic acid present in green coffee acts as the antioxidant for which this drink is so popular. It aids weight loss, keeps blood pressure in check, increase the metabolic rate and helps maintain sugar level in blood.

5. Lemon water

While drinking lemon water upon waking will not help you maintain or lose weight all on its own, research has shown that with other healthy habits, it can help increase metabolism and maintain a healthy weight. Lemons contain pectin, a type of fibre found in fruits that can help you feel fuller longer.

Besides, other lifestyle activities such as proper sleeping schedule and exercises add up to the above and keep your metabolic rate high and weight accumulation in the body low.
