Even with so many benefits, so many potential meditators are out there with prerequisite notions. So let’s break 7 misconceptions you might be having in your mind.
1. Meditation has to be done early in the morning otherwise it’s worthless.
Meditation can be done at any time. The simple logic behind waking up so early is that the world is quieter at these times. You haven’t started your daily duties yet. You won’t be bothered with phone calls, work, or household duties.
Also, the air is fresh and full of oxygen, which acts as a fuel to the efficient brain. While meditating first thing in the morning is highly recommended. Because you carry a calm and peaceful attitude into your day. There's no necessity to wake up at 4 AM and deprive yourself of complete sleep.
2. Meditation leads to creating a blank mind
While meditating does help calm the mind, this doesn’t mean the mind goes blank. Meditation gives the ability to observe one’s thoughts and emotions, without reacting to any. It helps you to notice and respond rather than react.
3. Meditation is only for stress and concentration.
The aim of meditation has always been the exploration of meaning and purpose in life. It connects you with deeper existential awareness. Increased concentration and reduced stress are some of its immediate health benefits. So if we want to truly understand meditation, you need to go beyond attention and into the realm of existential awareness. Meditation needs to be done at the same time every day.
4. Meditation gives results on the first day itself
The first day I meditated, I had more thoughts going through my mind than ever. I could not understand even by doing meditation, why I was having so many thoughts. It may happen with you as well and it’s perfectly normal. I realized meditation is not a one day trip to clarity and mindfulness. But yes, after a week I started feeling the difference and its worth those 10 minutes I give to my mind to heal and relax.
5. Meditation is done in a particular manner
There is no rule that you need to sit cross-legged for meditation. You may sit on a cushion, or a chair, walking, lying down. Some people cannot sit with their legs crossed. You can use another position and meditate.
6. All meditations are the same
When I began doing meditation, I always thought they all are same. Just sit and breathe. But with time and practice, I realised there are basic 6 types and subdivisions.
§ Mindfulness meditation.
§ Spiritual meditation.
§ Focused meditation.
§ Movement meditation.
§ Mantra meditation.
§ Transcendental meditation.
To know which type suits you, here is the link.
7. Meditation takes too much time
You don’t have to sit for hours. Sitting for 15-20 minutes/day to meditate, you start getting results within a week. Even as little as 5-10 minutes a day will yield significant results. While we spend hours scrolling through Instagram, we can give 10 minutes to our mind as well.
These are some most common misconceptions among people. Always find your facts and don’t go by words that may be misleading. So what is your excuse for not meditating today?
