Is being Overambitious bad?

A fine line that separates you being ambitious and over-ambitious is what success means to you. Matshona Dhilwayo said, “If you push your luck too hard, fortune’s muscles might tear.” If success means you do YOUR best irrespective what others achieve, you are ambitious. And if it means ONLY you do best among all may lead to becoming over-ambitious.

Keeping aspirations too high that pushes you from a doer to a day-dreamer makes your over-ambitious. While ambition makes you realize your goals and achieve it, over-ambition takes you far away from your goals. Also, failure becomes more depressing and affects you psychologically than the ambitious people you see around.

So what all problems we face when we aspire too high?

1. Depression

An unrealistic ambitious person always feels a lack of completeness. A sense of void in oneself that leads to comparing with others. And this leads to helplessness in case you start feeling jealous and anger on the outcomes of another person. This helplessness creates depression.

2. Avoid relaxing and enjoying simple pleasures

We are so engrossed in our daily projects and dreams that we start missing on simple pleasures. Playing with our children, spending time with family and going to vacations start seeming like some other dream.

3. Never satisfied

It does not matter how great successes you have achieved or how well your life may be going. You are never satisfied. You are always looking at what’s to come.

While these problems impose serious mental and emotional health issues, there’s always a way to save yourself. Yes, there’s a way or I should say multiple ways to mark that thin line between a doer and a day-dreamer. Today I will discuss five ways you can stop yourself becoming more ambitious than you ought to be.

1. Meditation.

It helps you realize opportunities to slow down throughout the day. Meditation helps you strike a balance to a never-ending thought-provoking ambitious mind. It leads to a serene state of mind that is filled with calmness and peace which relaxes your mind and offers a better sleep.

2. Experience simple pleasures

Allow your body to relax with your favourite music. Enjoy your favourite ice-cream. Realize that all these simple pleasures are what you’re working so hard for. This not only rejuvenates you but also increases your productivity when you return to your work.

3. Incorporating Gratitude in your daily life

Melody Beattie said, “Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.”

It’s important to reflect on your current gifts that you’ve been taking for granted. Gratitude reminds us that even in the worst situations we have so much to be grateful for.

4. Give time to your loved ones

Your family deserves your time more than anything else in this world. They are the ones you go back every single day after that hectic work schedule. Giving time, love and care proves that they do matter to you.

5. Dream big but scale down your goals.

Create goals that help you grow without sacrificing your mind, body and loved ones. Scale down your professional goals to a realistic approach which will help you grow both professionally as well as personally.

Aspiration asks for responsibility to fulfil your dreams, to balance your life and work persistently. Taking the help of above ways keeps your mind in check and balanced. So take some time and reflect on where you are heading towards. Make some notes or ask your loved ones. They are the best critic as well as motivators.

Besides, ambition is a life-long journey one travels and stops at substations to fuel itself. But that’s a story for some other blog. Until then, have a great time. Bye!
